My Summer at The Boston Globe
September 10th, 2024
This summer I had the pleasure of working as a Design Intern for The Boston Globe. Since the beginning of my career as an editorial designer, I have consistently looked to the Globe as an industry leader and have only further praise for the entire newsroom after spending twelve weeks as an intern.
Most of my family was born, or live currently, in Massachusetts. I have visited New England every year since I was a kid and know all too well about the importance of the Yankees v. Red Sox rivalry. Boston has always been my favorite city and having the opportunity to spend the summer there was a dream come true.
During my internship, I had the chance to work on a wide breadth of projects in which I honed my skills in editorial illustrations and page design while also expanding my knowledge of data visualization and web development. From designing the front-page illustration of the commemorative Celtic’s 2024 NBA Final Championship edition to working on the digital production of the Globe Magazine’s inaugural “Best of the Best” project, I had a chance to truly experience every aspect of modern storytelling being utilized in newsrooms today.
I reported directly to Omar Vega, Print Design Director, as well as having the opportunity to work closely with the Visual Storytelling team, led by Christina Prignano and Ryan Huddle. Working with such talented and knowledgeable mentors was an incredible opportunity that immeasurably improved my skills as a visual journalist.
In addition to those I worked with directly on the visual side, I also had the chance to meet many reporters who gave me advice (as well as recommendations for things to do in Boston from Mark Feeney). I even had the chance to work on a story with a UNC and Daily Tar Heel alum, Roy Greene. I spent as much time as I could in the newsroom and met so many wonderful people who always had time to say hello or offer help where they could.
Outside of my time at the Globe, I spent my time seeing Boston and exploring the metro area as much as I could. I spent most of my weekends split between the Public Garden and the Boston Public Library. I lived in Roxbury so also was able to explore neighborhoods further from downtown like Jamaica Plains and Brookline. I always knew I loved Boston but being able to spend three months living there allowed me to truly experience the city and learn what makes it so unique.

The Globe’s current Editor, Nancy Barnes, spoke to all of the interns about her career as a journalist. She revealed that she too had once been an intern for the Globe, and how the experience had sharpened her skills and propelled her toward a lifelong love and pursuit of quality journalism. There were various reporters I spoke to who had once interned for the Globe and spoke at length about how valuable the experience was for them. Looking back on my time, I completely agree and cannot express how grateful I am for my time spent working for the Globe.
I am currently staying in Massachusetts while I look for further opportunities to pursue editorial design full-time. My time at the Globe has cemented my love for the industry and I am extremely excited to see how the journalism industry continues to adapt and evolve to an ever-changing media landscape.
